SUMMARY This paper treats of a self-inducing type of flow which appears in the interaction process between shock waves and laminar and turbulent boundary layers. In the case of laminar boundary layer, the development of the layer is described on the usual assumptions. In the case of turbulent boundary layer, the layer is divided into two regions—-one the inner viscous layer adjacent to the wall and the other the outer in viscid layer. Then the growth of the inner viscous layer following Karman's dynamic similarity law is determined by the flow conditions at the inner edge of the outer in viscid layer. The obtained results agree fairly well with those of the experiments.
