Following starvation for 130 days the body weight of cod decreased by 30 %, the diameter of the red muscle fibres by 15 % (P < 0001) and that of the white muscle fibres by 40% (P < 0001). Coalfish swimming continuously for 42 days at a speed of 0-93 body length (/./see) showed no change in weight compared with controls but the red fibres increased in diameter by 55 % (P < 0001). There was no significant change in diameter of the white fibres. At 201 i/sec both the red and white fibres of coalfish increased in diameter (by 61 % and 32 % respectively, P < 0-001 in both cases) although the body weight decreased by 13 % compared with the controls.
