Positron lifetime and annihilation lineshape measurements have been performed to study the behaviour of vacancies during GP zone formation and growth in various Al-Zn alloys quenched to 200K. The results suggest that vacancies in these alloys are surrounded by Zn atoms. Vacancy recovery is found only above 220K when GP zones already exist in the lattice. Above room temperature the well-developed zones are free of vacancy-type defects.
