A three-dimensional high resolution servo microdisplacement stage has been developed to achieve the high accuracy alignment and low-loss splices of single-mode fibres. This stage is simple and compact, easy to manufacture and assemble, inexpensive, and very reliable. The displacement resolution of 0.1 mu m over a movable stroke of about 60 mu m has been determined by experiment. By applying this stage to the CQU-1 automatic single-mode fibre fusion splicer the authors have developed previously, an average splice loss of 0.02 dB has been achieved.
