The compressive strength of water soaked diabase is found to be about 60% of that of diabase dried at temperatures greater than 190°C. Several solvents other than water failed to cause a decrease in the strength of diabase. This suggests that water is involved in a chemical reaction during the fracturing process, and that its effect is not simply capillary action.
