Deuterium NMR results from labeled chains appended to nematogens and discotigens, chains linking mesogenic units in linear polymeric nematics and simplen‐alkanes and lipids solubilized in a nematic solvent are examined. A phenomenological single chain model is used as a vehicle for contrasting alkyl chain flexibility in various ordered phases. Agreement between the model and experiment suggests a commonality in the behavior of all of these types of alkyl chains originating from a repulsive (steric) constraint that is imposed on the isomerization of the chain by the local ordered environment.
