Experimental evaluation finds electrochemical impedance spectroscopy predicts anti-corrosion performance in zinc-rich epoxy primers, indicating a rapid alternative to standard weathering tests.
Zinc-rich epoxy primers (ZREPs) protect steel by providing both galvanic protection and a physical barrier. This study explores how electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) can predict the anti-corrosion performance of ZREPs. Using EIS offers advantages such as reducing formulation development time and providing quantitative data on galvanic performance. Selected ZREPs with at least 80% zinc by weight in the dry film have been evaluated. The work shows that EIS is a promising method for assessing ZREPs, with findings compared to traditional accelerated corrosion tests like neutral salt spray and cyclic aging.
