May facilitate basic cardiovascular research using platelet models; leaves open any impact on clinical hemostasis or atherosclerosis management.
Since platelets are simplified cells with no nucleus and little potential for synthesizing protein, they are well suited for studying certain other cell functions, such as ability to aggregate, to adhere to surfaces, to contract, and to undergo a release reaction similar to the secretory process in other cells. Their physiologic and pathologic functions are related to their ability to adhere, aggregate, and release; they are essential for hemostasis, important in thrombosis, and perhaps significant in the genesis of atherosclerosis. Some aspects of their morphology and function are reviewed.
