Papovavirus tumor (T) antigens are defined as those virus-specific antigens that react specifically with serum from animals bearing virus-induced tumors but not with serum from control animals. Until recently major questions concerning the T antigens were, What are the T antigens? and Are they virus-coded? In the case of polyoma virus (Py), it is now reasonably clear that the early region of the viral DNA codes for at least three protens (Ito et al. 1977a, b, c; Schaffhausen et al. 1978; Hutchinson et al. 1978; Ito 1979); large T (~100K), middle T (~55K), and small T (~22K). It is now of importance to determine the function and mechanism of action of the early proteins.
