Field‐ionization (FI) mass spectrometry is an established method for obtaining abundant molecular ions1 of a variety of compounds, and recently has been used in conjunction with exact mass measurements for determination of elemental compositions of molecules.2,3 Very little, however, has been reported on the value of normal fragment ions and metastable ions appearing in the FI spectrum as a source of structural information.
