The beam-foil technique has been applied to study the iodine spectrum. New assignments are given for the I VI transitions 5 s 2 1 S 0 -5 s 5 p 1 P 1 0 , 5 s 2 1 S 0 -5 s 5 p 3 P 1 0 , 5 s 5 p 3 P 0 0 -5 s 5 d 3 D 1 , 5 s 5 p 3 P 1 0 -5 s 5 d 3 D 2 , 5 s 5 p 3 P 2 0 -5 s 5 d 3 D 3 and 5 s 5 p 1 P 1 0 -5 s 7 s 1 S 0 , and tentatively for the I VII 4 f -5 g transition. Lifetimes have been measured for the 5 s 5 p 1 P 1 0 and 3 P 1 0 levels of I VI and for the 5 p 2 P 0 levels of I VII. MCHF calculations have been performed for two multiplets in I VI and for two multiplets in I VII. The experimental energies of the three lowest 1 S terms are used to derive an I VI ionization potential of 72.9 eV.
