A modified Hall's theory of structural relaxation has been applied to explain the excess ultrasonic absorption in methanol in the temperature range 0-50 ^∘{}C. Two states, one characterized by higher volume (icelike structure) and the other by lower volume (close-packed structure), are assumed to be available to each molecule of methanol. The assumption made here, regarding the assignment of τ values for methanol obtained from correlating its acoustical properties to that of water, shows very good agreement between the theoretical and experimental approaches. The value of β_∞=53×10^-12 cm²/dyn and ΔVV=0.45 have been used for the calculation.
