A simple and rapid procedure to extract polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from marine sediments by means of microwave energy is proposed. Both spiked and real sediment samples were irradiated with microwaves in a closed vessel system while immersed in hexane–acetone (1:1). Factorial design was applied to optimize the microwave assisted solvent extraction process by using a spiked sediment. Four variables (extraction time and temperature, solvent volume and moisture percentage in the sediment) were considered in the optimization process. The results show that all compounds behave in the same way and that only the solvent volume is statistically significant. Recoveries of PCBs were around 100% with 2 to 11% relative standard deviation. Validation of the extraction process was carried out by processing a certified reference material.
