In approximately 65% of patients who have a stoma formed, it will be a permanent adaptation to their bowel management. This represents a major transition in a person's life and requires a great deal of adjustment. Most stoma patients experience psychological concerns, and lose their confidence, independence and often dignity. These patients need psychological support and the teaching of practical skills to help them regain their independence. This article aims to equip healthcare assistants with the knowledge they need to teach patients how to manage their own stomas effectively.
