Spergularia marina seeds remain dormant under a number of environmental conditions. Apparently, the inability of this species to germinate is environmentally controlled, because exposure to light, cold stratification, or alternating day/night temperatures all play a role in breaking dormancy. Seeds were also inhibited from germinating at low temperatures or high salt concentrations. These enforced dormancies could be broken by eliminating the stress conditions Gibberellic acid treatments overcame dormancies induced by suboptimal environmental conditions.
