The relevant research literature is reviewed to determine the psychological components in 2 psychophysiological disorders, recurrent herpes labialis and recurrent aphthous ulcerations. Two major variables emerge: that emotional stress is usually associated with outbreaks of both, and appears to be the precipitating agent; and that counseling and psychotherapy appear to have an effect upon the nature of the recurrences and oftentimes upon their cessation.
