The need of this study is to diagnose faults of rotor bar cracks by utilizing digital signal processing of phase currents obtained from a three-phase generator in a small renewable energy system. The proposed contribution in this paper includes a practical two-stage approach. The first stage involves analyzing the phase current signal using a conventional power spectral density (PSD) estimation through Hilbert transform (HT). The second stage analyzes the phase current via discrete wave transform (DWT), followed by PSD and Hilbert transform analysis. By splitting the phase current signals into multiple frequency bands and analyzing specific approximations and details, it is possible to identify characteristic frequency components related to BRB faults. This combination significantly improved the detection of BRB faults for the studied generators. The results from implementing the proposed combination approach were verified and enhanced by comparing with the results obtained from the stator current generated by a squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) in a small wind turbine installation of 5.7 kW.
