Pure rotational absorption spectra of ozone and sulfur dioxide (100-200 microns) have been correlated with the microwave reciprocal moments and the distortion constants through Polo's first-order treatment of centrifugal distortion. A small grating spectrometer was used to record five weak Q branches of O3 and about eight due to SO2. The SO2 spectrum is complicated by relatively strong associated P and R branch lines. The values of the most important distortion constant, DK, are found to be 1.96×10—4 and 7.61×10—5 for O3 and SO2, respectively. The respective values calculated from the centrifugal distortion constants are 1.95×10—4 and 8.54×10—5 cm—1. The five other distortion terms were also calculated. The ease of obtaining reasonably accurate molecular constants from far infrared investigations is pointed out and theoretical treatment of SO2 is suggested.
