The exchange-field splitting of a single Yb³⁺ ion in ytterbium iron garnet was measured by observing the energy distribution of neutrons scattered by the specimen at room temperature and at liquid nitrogen temperature. The results are consistent with those of other experiments and also with Tinkham's spin-wave model.
