Four hundred men with culturally proved gonococcal urethritis were treated with four antibiotic programs. Treatment with 2.4 million units of procaine penicillin G on two consecutive days resulted in a 25% failure rate, while treatment with 2.4 million units of procaine penicillin G twice plus 2.4 million units of penicillin G benzathine showed a 9.3% failure rate. Patients treated with probenecid plus 2.4 million units of procaine penicillin G had a 7.6% failure rate, and those treated with tetracycline hydrochloride had a 7.1% failure rate.
L. Herbert Maurer (1969) studied this question.
