The temperature dependence of macroscopic slip planes observed on tension and compression sides of specimens deformed slowly by four‐point bending has been investigated over the temperature range 195 to 483 °K. The experimental results are presented in form of Ψ(χ)‐curves. The measured Ψ (χ)‐curves were compared with the curves calculated by Vítek using the theory of thermally activated motion of screw dislocations extended on {110} and {112} planes and good agreement was found above room temperature. Discrepancies between the calculated and measured Ψ(χ)‐curves exist at low temperatures, where slip along {110}‐planes becomes significant. Differences between the Ψ(χ)‐curves measured on the tension and the compression side cannot be satisfactorily explained by existing theories.
