Experiments have been undertaken in this laboratory to investigate the effects of Xand y-radiations on dilute aqueous solutions of bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNase).2 This enzyme offers several advantages in the investigation of structural changes accompanying radiolytic degradation. The covalent structure of the protein molecule has been completely determined (1), and it has been established that its secondary and tertiary structure is defined by the primary sequence of amino acids only (2). In the following report the effects of X-rays on the kinetic and optical properties of ribonuclease solutions are examined in relation to changes in the enzymatic activity.
