We consider the inverse heat transfer problem for the case of the one-dimensional heat equation in a quarter plane, and present a new solution algorithm together with error bounds of logarithmic convexity type. Our method is based on regularizing the initial value problem for the heat equation run sideways. We describe a numerical experiment with rapidly varying temperature profiles, and explain how the method can be extended to problems with temperature dependent thermal properties.
