The 584 Å photoelectron spectra of S2 and Te2 are reported. The features of the S2 spectrum are analogous to those in the O2 spectrum, and hence the states of S2+ are assigned in corresponding fashion. However, in the spectrum of Te2 anomalous intensities are apparent. The relative intensities of the peaks assigned to 2Πg,1/2 and 2Πg,3/2 are in the ratio 10:1, whereas in O2 they are approximately equal. Some of the other anticipated peaks are either absent or very weak. An analysis is presented to account for this anomaly, based on Hund’s case-c coupling.
