This article explores the ways in which site ontology helps us to understand how different sites are connected. The theoretical discussion seeks to contribute to the recent debate which connects theories of practice to the study of large social phenomena. Practice theories have contributed to the analysis of everyday life and daily routines and, especially on the local level, help to generate relevant insights. However, it is more difficult for practice theorists to analyse social phenomena beyond the kitchen, the farmyard or the urban neighbourhood. Thus, the following discussion of site ontology aims to explore the ways in which practice theory and the notion of sites can be usefully applied to analyse spatially dispersed and far-flung phenomena.
