Summary. The spectral dependence of the cross section for production of fluorescence by extreme ultraviolet photoionization of CO2 was determined. The process was investigated from threshold at 686–170 A using a synchrotron radiation light source and photometric determination of the fluorescence intensity. The excitation rate by the solar ultraviolet at 1 AU, calculated from these data, is d = 8.8 × 10−8 sec−1 molecule−1. The column excitation rates for an overhead sun at Venus and Mars were computed to be 7.8 and 1.7 kR, respectively.
