A double beam single detector wavelength modulation system has been developed which effectively eliminates the contribution of the background to the observed spectra. With this system, weak structure not apparent in a conventional measurement can easily be detected, with a sensitivity limited by the photon shot noise. The technique is applied to the determination of the band structure of semiconductors.
