A colour–magnitude diagram is given for the galactic open cluster Ruprecht 79. Of the 161 stars measured, 77 are considered to be cluster members. The absorption-corrected distance modulus is 12.55±0.16 mag, this assumes R = 3.05 and |$E(B-V)=0.794$| for the B stars and is referenced to a Pleiades modulus of 5.57 mag. If the Cepheid CS Vel is a cluster member then it has |Mᵥ=-3.24| and |B₀- V₀=0.61|.
