One hundred and eight sheep were divided into 3 equal groups. After electrical stunning, 1 group was slaughtered by the traditional gash cutting method, a second was spear stuck while lying in a horizontal position, and the third was spear stuck while suspended vertically, head down, from a rail. Spear sticking reduced the weight of blood collected by approximately 10% and slightly increased bleeding times.
