We present a comparative ab initio study of the direct double photoionization process in Ca and He. Strong similarities are found, but core effects become observable as the energy increases, leading to more correlated patterns in Ca than in He, as well as to the appearance of weak secondary structures in Ca, which call for further studies. A consistency check of two measurements by Ross et al of the resonant double photoionization cross section of Ca is also performed successfully.
