Lattice polarization and coulomb energies in V02

The screening of the repulsive Coulomb interaction associated with anomalously charged states in the high temperature phase of VO2 effected through lattice polarization is investigated on the basis of a simple model, motivated by consideration of the VO2 crystal structure, and is found to be sufficient to allow the occurrence of the polar fluctuations necessary for the existence of a metallic state.
