SummaryShoot apices (5–8 mm long) of five apple scion cultivars were cultured in vitro, when they produced new shoots apparently from lateral meristems. The cultures were multiplied about five-fold every three weeks for 12 months, and 80% or more of the shoots were rooted and 90% or more of the resulting plants were grown-on in pots of soil. This makes possible the rapid production of self-rooted apple trees which could give major economic advantages in modern high-density orchard systems.
