SUMMARY Experimental glasshouses are expensive and permanent, and provide a long-term research facility. Good initial design is essential. Some aspects of repeatedly harvested crop research are discussed with particular reference to experimental design. The layout of a new glasshouse facility is described and the experimental flexibility of this layout is discussed. Data from the first year of experimentation are presented and the implications of an analysis of this data for future experimental design are considered.
