The role of surface renewal and feedback phenomena in devolatilization equipment is clearly illustrated via staged models. A continuous model for the vented, single‐screw devolatilizer is developed, including barrel evaporation and bulk surface renewal as well as backmixing, which represents de‐volatilization data more accurately than previous models. Numerous sample computations are included. The models are used to demonstrate the sensitivity of devolatilization equipment to certain design parameters.
