Summary A saline extract of Ulex europaeus seeds has been used to differentiate between apparent A1 and A2 red cells in 284 instances, and between A1B and A2B cells in 94 instances. It has also been used to detect H‐substance in salivas of 3144 individuals. Because of frequent failure to detect A2B cells, the Ulex reagent proved inferior to presently available anti‐A1 agglutinins for routine use. However, the finding that certain A cells were agglutinated by both anti‐A1 and anti‐H reagents indicates once again that A1‐A2 differentiation is not always clear‐cut. About 24% of the salivas tested did not contain H‐substance. Among the other 76%, larger amounts of H‐substance tended to occur in the salivas from individuals of blood groups O and A2.
