We have measured the dispersion of all the photoelastic coefficients in zinc selenide using a conventional acoustooptic technique, Dixon-Cohen method. It is found that W 3 and W 5 , which are linear combinations of strain-optic coefficients, change their signs near the band edge but the sign of W 1 is not changed. The behaviour of those dispersion curves is accounted for using a theory by Higginbotham et al. , and the values of deformation potentials a , b and d are derived as fitting parameters.
