The elastic constants of GaP have been determined from Brillouin spectra with the 90° scattering geometry at room temperature. The photoelastic constants have also been estimated, where the intensity calibration was performed with fused quartz. The results are: C 11 =14.11±0.38, C 12 =6.26±0.25 and C 44 =7.03±0.12 in units of 10 11 dyn/cm 2 , and | P 11 |=0.161±0.011, | P 12 |=0.088±0.007 and | P 44 |=0.073±0.004.
