The objective of this work was to determine the error induced in air sampling filter weights by water adsorption. The weight gains caused by water adsorption at various temperatures and relative humidities were measured. The relationship between the concentration of water in the air and filter weight gain was determined. The relationship was determined for various filter materials and filters of the same material from different manufacturers. The weight gain was found to be a potentially significant source of error for filters of all types. The use of desiccation prior to weighing under ambient conditions in order to reduce this error was found to be ineffective.
