In Szent-Györgyi's theory of cancer development the transformed cell reverts to a more primitive state because oxidative processes break down. This breakdown is caused by a “conductive” protein reverting to a nonconductive state, thereby preventing electron flow in the respiratory chain. This novel theory suggests novel experimental approaches, some of which are outlined in the text. Finally it is shown that protein molecules, if they are conductors (have a partially filled band), interact much more strongly with each other than when they possess completely filled valence bands.
