Various computational procedures have from time to time been suggested to solve problems involving strain localization. One of these is adaptive remeshing — but here occasional failures were experienced if the original mesh was not suitably aligned. We show in this paper that such failures are mainly due to non‐robust formulation of the plasticity problem — and illustrate an automatic and generally applicable adaptive procedure on several examples.
