Despite the reductions in hospital bed usage, community care has not had a great impact on the social functioning of patients with schizophrenia.This may result from a lack of psychological focus for these treatments. However, factors within both individuals and families can produce a toxic interaction with care in the community. Some of these toxic factors are listed and their implications for rehabilitation and community care are discussed.
