On June 8, a science advisory panel of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended that EPA should set a standard on acid aerosols to protect public health. Several studies indicate that acid aerosols may affect people's health. The findings of any one of the studies are full of uncertainty, but the results in totality establish a strong suspicion that acid aerosols might be affecting people's health by impairing the ability of the upper respiratory tract and the deep parts of the lungs to clear themselves of harmful particles. The subcommittee did not recommend a specific standard, and Congress appears to be at loggerheads over acid rain bills.
