The authors deal with an inductive ratio transducer (IRT) instrumentation system which has been developed for precise displacement measurement. The transducer has been tested for use in both normal and hostile environments. The system response is highly precise, linear, free from hysteresis effects and similar in nature to a self-compensated LVDT transducer. It has the advantages of a lower number of windings, smaller size, less weight and lower cost than both uncompensated and other compensated-type LVDT transducers. The immunity to undesired excitation conditions and to external and internal influences of temperatures makes the system suitable for measurement in all types of environments including hostile conditions.
