Helical dislocations observed in Cu–50·35 at. % Zn β-brass quenched from 600°c consist of straight segments repeating in cyclic order about the helical axis. The formation of such an angular helix is shown to be compatible with the high elastic anisotropy of β-brass and the tendency for the climbing dislocation to mimimize its line energy.
