Dramatic differences in magnetic and electrical properties of the isostructural compounds [(DT-TTF)2M(mnt)2] have been investigated. For M = Au, with a diamagnetic anion, the conductivity is activated and two-legged spin-ladder magnetic behaviour is observed. Paramagnetic anions (M = Pt (shown here), Ni) give two magnetic subsystems, formed by metallic DT-TTF double stacks and the [M(mnt)2] chains, that interact.
