The theory is presented of a new method for measuring in transmission the following six optical properties of a dielectric, particularly when present together: circular birefringence, linear birefringence relative to two perpendicular axes, linear birefringence relative to another pair of axes bisecting the first, and the extinction coefficient of each of these three properties. The method is a systematic one which involves the measurement of the difference in transmitted intensity of two equally intense beams having certain incident and analysed polarization states. The link between these observed intensity differentials and the six properties is made using the Jones calculus, in particular the 2 2 2 Jones matrix representing the total optical effect of a medium on an elliptically polarized light wave.
