The polysaccharide fraction of the mycelium and of the culture filtrate of strains of Basidiobolus isolated from human disease were partially characterized and compared with similar polysaccharides from strains of B. ranarum isolated from nature. The major sugar constituents of both polysaccharide preparations were studied by paper and gas chromatographic methods and, regardless of the source of the isolate, were glucose, mannose and galactose. The average relative ratios were 6:2:1 for the extracellular (culture filtrate) and 9:2:1 for the cell-bound (mycelial) polysaccharide preparations. Glucosamine, but not galactosamine, was found in the cell-bound polysaccharides of the pathogen and in the extracellular material of the saprophyte.
