Addition of 4,4‘,4‘ ‘,4‘ ‘‘-tetra- tert -butyl-6,6‘,6‘ ‘,6‘ ‘‘-tetra- tert -butyl-2,2‘,2‘ ‘,2‘ ‘‘-(1,8-anthracenemethanediyl)tetraphenol ( 1 ) to a solution of Al 2 Me 6 affords a tetranuclear aluminum species ( 2 ) which, upon heating, formed a binuclear species ( 3 ). Treatment of 3 with NEt 4 Cl allowed for the isolation of 4, a discrete bimetallic aluminum assembly wherein the two metals simultaneously coordinate an external nucleophile.
