Paris I through III of this paper present the results of a project aimed at creating an improved rolling bearing spalling fatigue life prediction method. (a) A large experimental bearing life database is assembled. (b) A mathematical life prediction model is formulated that includes traction, EHD film and surface roughness effects and numerous bearing material, design, manufacturing and operating parameters. (c) The model is fitted to the database and its fit statistically evaluated. (d) The model is compared with major published models and parametrically explored. (e) Applicability of the model to rolling bearing design tasks is reviewed. The present paper is Part I, the mathematical model.
