Summary The effects of interfacial tension (IFT) on displacement behavior have been investigated through flow visualization experiments in porous media formed by thin layers of sintered glass beads. Fluid densities and viscosities were matched to avoid viscous and gravitational instabilities. Displacements were carried out with aqueous/oleic liquid pairs, which gave IFT’s of 17.0, 1.2, 0.029, and 0.002 dynes/cm [17.0, 1.2, 0.029, and 0.002 mN/m]. Results show how IFT, wettability, and model heterogeneity interact to determine the shape and stability of the displacement front.
